cover story: one year later
Heather and Rich wanted me to photograph them outside their home during the early months of the pandemic for their second wedding anniversary.
We had fun taking photos on their front steps, on the sidewalk; I even had them go inside and stick their heads out the window!
Fast forward a few months and Heather and Rich were made into our cover family for our book The Front Steps Project Brooklyn! I got to work with Heather a bunch before they left Brooklyn for an amazing job opportunity for Rich in Zurich!
Here's their interview from March 2021, a year after we first met:
Has your life changed since I last saw you? How so?
(As you already know and have been a big part of...) We held strong all year here in Brooklyn. I started a children's theatre company to continue creating and bringing musical theatre into the lives of young students. Our biggest news now is that we are moving to Zurich, Switzerland this summer!
Any big lessons you've learned in the past 12 months? Can be personal, systemic, education, work, etc.
Where to begin? Everything feels different. Like so many others during the pandemic, we have a different perspective on what really matters in our lives and how we spend our time and energy. Our relationship with each other has grown more than we imagined it could. We have become less complaisant, have learned to take action and have tough conversations. We are thankful every day for what we have, but are also learning to allow ourselves the space to process what has changed and what we have lost.
What are your hopes (personal, societal) for the next 12 months?
My biggest hope is that the hard lessons we all learned the past year aren't forgotten as we try to move forward. Personally, we're excited about the challenge of our new adventure! It's going to be hard to leave NYC, but we will always be New Yorkers at heart.
